My long review of two blog widgets: DandyID & SocialProfilr.

My review of a couple of my new widgets.

I put Dandy here on my 365 and Social on my tester blog. See the links to see them in action:

http://payneas.com/Project365/
http://blog.payneas.com/

Here is the direct link to my DandyID profile in case you don’t want to use a widget like I have linked above:
http://www.dandyid.org/id/payneas

SocialProfilr is pretty basic and easy to use. One thing that I like about it is that it links directly to your social site profiles rather than creating new links that redirect. The two major disadvantages are the limited social sites you get to choose from. I count 14 from the settings page. It does have the FB/MySpace/Twitter favorites but I know I am a member of more communities than just those three. The second disadvantage is the appearance of the widget itself. It lists the icon of the site as well as its name, however, the name itself is not clickable. You have to click the icon. I keep hovering over the text name expecting to see a link and then remembering I have to hover over the tiny icon instead.

DandyID had the major advantage of listing over 300 sites! I couldn’t believe it when I finished and found out that I was a member of 91 different sites. It could have been more but I know there has been a few that have deleted me for inactivity (Blogger for example). I was quite impressed that it even had a few not so common sites, such as ravelry.com– an invite only, closed community of knitters that I belong to. And if your site isn’t listed, at the bottom, you can add the site along with the link to your profile. Unfortunately, I do not, at this point, see the link I added to my WoWWiki profile but I may not be looking in the right place. The first disadvantage is that I wish it could check automatically for my existence on all these sites instead of making me check each individually. One service did this for me just the other day… I think maybe my Gmail profile. Asked me to enter my commonly used username(s) and it would check for my presence on other sites. It found a picasa account I had completely forgotten about. Another advantage is that DandyID is handy for at least keeping track of all the sites I belong to and which I don’t so a year later, if I’ve forgotten whether or not I’ve signed up for a site, I don’t have to try out several username/password combos to find out if I maybe created an account there. Pop the link to my profile onto DandyID and then just check it if I need to. One more possible disadvantage is if you have a lot of sites (like me with 91) and choose to use the widget on your blog, it could take up a whole lot of room! Of course there are options, which I might utilize, to change the orientation and view options. You can choose horizontal or vertical, and whether or not the site is displayed as an icon, its text link, or both. I currently have mine set at vertical and both. If I switched to vertical and icon only it may shrink the size of it on my sidebar. The biggest disadvantage is that you have to keep in mind that your DandyID profile is PUBLIC with no way to make it private. I originally plugged in my address and phone number until I realized that, then quickly removed both items. A last disadvantage is that it creates a DandyID link to your various profiles and redirects them to your actual profile. I would prefer the way SocialProfilr has it set up to link directly to your profile. Last but not least is either an advantage or disadvantage depending on your point of view… Yes, you have to sign up for yet ANOTHER website. However, it helps you keep track of all the different sites you’ve signed up for. Heck, you could probably set the Services page as your default so that when you open your web browser you can simply scroll down and click the link for whatever site you want to travel to!

So far, I am really liking the DandyID service, much to my surprise. I reluctantly signed up for it and started the setup with the idea that I was going to hate it. I ended up staying up till 4 a.m. in the morning just having fun with it!

I think that if you just want to link (on your blog) Facebook, Twitter, and/or MySpace then SocialProfilr is the way to go. If you want to link more than one then go ahead and try out DandyID. And don’t forget that you could join DandyID without choosing to use the blog widget.

Finally, it does have the possibility of generating more spam to all your various accounts you choose to activate with either service. However, it also has the possibility of generating valid traffic as well.
